This is a live recording from an outdoor gathering called Prosperity that happens deep in the Washington desert with a close group of my super homies every year. I had brought out my KSP8 effects processor for real time dub effects with some midi-controllers.
The style on this mix is more or less all breaks. enjoy!

Heres a quick new mix on the melodic intricate IDM side of things. This mix is more or less just my favorite emotive IDM songs from the past few years =) great for that ride home from a festival.

Lightning in a bottle, an amazing yearly festival in southern California held a mixtape contest to win a dj slot on the line up – The limitation being that you could only use artists who were booked on the line up – seeing as their curation is impeccable I thought this could be a fun challenge.
It features three distinct sections – each one representing a different style / energy. In order to make many of these songs more dj friendly I made special edits of these songs focusing on the bits I wanted to highlight for this mix. I did the mixing in Ableton Live using several midi controllers to send audio from the computer to an external tempo-synced KSP-8 digital effects processor – you can hear a number of these lush organic dub style delays and reverbs through out the mix.

I was honored to be asked to play at the Portland Om Records 15 year anniversary party with house legends Dj Heather from my hometown Chicago, Olivier Desmet from Belgium and local hero Mercedes. Since I played early in the night I decided to use this as a chance to try my hand at playing a bunch of the 100bpm space disco I'd collected and work my way into all the new goodies Ive collected over the summer. Please leave your thoughts and comments below – they are always welcome… Also to be informed of new mixes please sign up for my mailing list below

The focus of Designer Minds is on innovative underground dance music whatever the flavor, which begs the question – what exactly is "underground" anways? With venturing too deep into subjective opinion I'll venture that when a persons integrity outweighs ego and their dedication to artistic expression is unwavering they oftentimes will be described as underground.
With that said – Random Rab is such an artist, Just doin his thing, and making music true to his heart. For Seattle at the synchromystic event this meant a special night – one where the energy held tight and only built as the evening progressed with Rab holding down the "Sexy Time" with some of the thickest funky beats that have ever hit the Church of Bass.
If you enjoy this recording take a moment to reflect what takes to make it happen and consider supporting the underground artists that help make it happen. The cd is absolutely stellar, the audio is pristine, deep, and incredibly well engineered with some of my personal favorite artwork I've seen to date from Andrew Jones – and hes done a lot of wicked stuff over the years. Purchase your own copy by clicking the image below. Many props to Rab for permission to post this and sharing his love with us. Oh yes! Skoi had the foresight to bring a recorder to this show and caught both mine and Random Rabs set (which you can check here). This was a great show – the venue was packed with people getting down all night long – not one moment where the energy waned. I played after Rab and so being a big fan of his worked wanted to slowly work out of his grooves into whatever else flowed…. turns out what flowed was a one way trip to the land of facemelt. I didnt see that one coming.

Welcome to the latest installment of the designer minds podcast – Most people think of full on tribal techno large soundsystem mayhem when talking about Michael Manahans dj set – but did you know he has a softer fuzzier side? – granted the softer fuzzier side only seems to come out around the third bottle of tequila or so to kill the pain of a hard days work doing drive-bys. He's a hard working man… This is a beautiful introspective IDM mix perfectly fitted for the northwest winters or wherever you may find yourself. Leave comments or visit his website. Tracklisting coming soon.

Welcome to another installment of Designer Minds podcast – This installment is a live recording of Mr Projectile from his most recent trip through Portland on the semisexual tour. Mr Projectile is most well known for his downtempo releases on the infamous & now defunct Merck label however he has been working on an uptempo electroish live dance project. By live I mean completely live and even more noteworthy done without computer relying heavily on custom built Nord Modular G2 patches and super slick machinedrum patternings.
It was a welcome departure from the overly structured and formulaic dance music we've sadly become accustomed to – diving into the realms of live mixing, subtle minimal adjustments and deep tonal appreciation. I was simultaneously nostalgic for the '96 acid trance I grew up on as a wee raver lad and amazed at the intricate cascading drum rhythyms that weaved in and out.
Much thanks to Matt for permission to record this and share this with all my friends who I know who are fans and yet couldnt make it due to previous engagements. Im going to drop a hint… we may yet see Mr Projectile again at an out-of-doors moonlit occasion in the deep woods.
