Im slowly working my way through these mixes and providing full pages for each one with tracklistings and links to similar mixes etc. If the page exists click the album art to get to it.
2008 Alien Step
I ended up talking so much shit about boring dubstep djs that I had to make a mix to prove to people that i DO in fact like dub step, just not 95% of what I hear.
2008 Space Disco Nights
A fresh take on what originally made disco good. Forget that the word Disco brings up horribly cheesy ideas, forget rails of coke and meth, forget disco bisquits.
2008 - Writing Sea of Moonlit Tentacles
Slithering robotic idm beats from another dimension, Vibes from the other side, yet not all is dark and twisted … If you venture far enough you’ll emerge into some of the softest fluffiest spaces yet.
2007 - Cell Abrasion
I hate to put a genre on this since its so in the middle of many of them Its got trance, techno, psychedelia, space and beauty mixed in. Lots of what we were playing at the now defunct mnml monthly in Portland.
2007 - Robots Robots Robots
Superfun and bass laden dancefloor stompers all themed on science robots and technology. Done with the hybrid glitching live remix set up in Ableton.
2007 - Live Set
This is just a framework of some tracks that I whipped up in two days to provide a beat bed for my super talented violinist friend from chicago (Mr Dominic Johnson) to play on top of. It wasn’t possible to record the set because the sound guy was having some sort of meltdown and didnt want to help out in any way shape or form. so heres just the beats.
2007 - Crunch N Munch
This was a test run of a set I prepared for playing in Tucson at the Gem n Jam in 2006. All the looping glitching and slicing and dicing was done realtime. The style is a weird mix of psy-fi hiphop into 100bpm chunky downtempo beats.
2007 - Live at Momentum (Orlando)
This was a live recording of a set I did in Orlando earlier this year. Chunky funky breaks with the ableton live effects rack for realtime tweakin. On an unrelated note - what’s up with Orlando being the hater epicenter of the united states? Im meeting too many fucked up folks from there to not notice. Well if you can call them getting in my face and fucking with me while im spinning “meeting”
2006 - More Noise Please
More Noise? YES MORE NOISE PLEASE! It all makes sense at the end no? It starts off beautiful and works its way into some really crunchy bassbin rattlers.
2006 - Music For the Black Lodge
This is a concept mix done for my friend Evans mailing list where he posed the question “What music would you play In David Lynches Black Lodge from Twin Peaks?”. Being a huge Lynch fan and of all his super fucking creepy moods and moments I wanted to try to put together a mix that created the same sort of vibe. Unsettling, borderline unpleasant and yet artfully done and compelling.
2006 - Live at Summer Meltdown
I lovingly think of this set as buttock breaks but theres probably only one song that fits that bill and most people think of the term buttrock as having negative conotations so forget I said that - this sets good and despite the fact that I was playing against one of the headliners on the main night there was a great crowd for this one.
2005 - Live on WNUR
Good ole WNUR in evanston chicago. I used to play on this station with my friend Mary way back in the day so it was awesome to come back and play whatever I wanted. This mix starts off with the spiritual downtempo guru vibe and works into more heady stuff.
2005 - LSD
Put on the headphones and close your eyes. Its the only way to fly. This ones been test driven and it works.
2000 - Amphibian
Before psychill was even a genre and become the sprawling mass of monotony it is today I made this mix. The idea was to create a storytelling piece of a journey from water to land.
1996 - Journey to Ixtlan
Where were you into 1996? I was keeping it real even back then with the downtempo beats except back then in the scene I was hanging in no one would dream of dancing to this stuff and no one listened to it. I encoded this from cassette tape and did my best to clean up any hissing, dc offset, pops and scratchs, and mastered it so it sounds better than ever.
2005 - the Four CornersBased on the idea of the Hopi indians Four Corner philosophy I tried mixing a narrative of snippets from Tom Robbins Even cowgirls get the blues into a random assortment of downtempo gems that wouldnt fit elsewhere.
Yeah Yeah Yeah Whatever
This one is all the super weird eclectic songs that dont fit anywhere else. some remixes of Postal Service with some 2005 electro-clash spinoffs. If you are the sort of person who says “I only listen to X genre of music” this mix probably isnt for you.
2005 - Dark Matters
A breaks mix.
2004 - Expansive Drift
Phidelity does house. of course its phidelity flavored which isnt your standard wheat gluten sprayed with synthetic cheese! well perhaps some people would rag on me for Armand Van Heldens - Flowers at the end but hey its a fucking great song which Ive had some of the fondest memories of dancing to. The rest of its kinda spacious, not too involved intellectually, and pretty.
2004 - Lowcool
Starts off with one of my favorite intros. Me and all my friends continually quote this! “whats a 207? thats a muhfucking kidnap!” Thanks for ezra to hooking me up this track on vinyl! Ice chilled relaxing lounge beats for your chillaxin pleasure.
2003 - Big Friendly Giants
Joy used to joke that I should call myself the BFG the big friendly giant from Roald Dahls stories. I did a mix called that instead.. This is the summer I gave up on psytrance alltogether. I still like this mix though im officially over psytrance. My friends told me once that while at a psytrance party they didnt like what was being played so they went to their car and popped this on instead.
2003 - Live at Burning Man
This was a good year for me at burningman. So many powerful experiences and life changing art experiences. I was in an extremely emotional state and played all the emotional gushy pieces I wanted.
2002 - The Dreamer and the Dreamed
Based on the part in Carlos Castenadas books where Carlos is posed with the challenge of finding out who is really the dreamer and who is the dreamed. This is pretty much hands down everyones favorite mix. I wanted to follow in the vein I discovered in Amphibian of downtempo storytelling. This one journies through ethic bass laden beauty into techy future dub and along the way weaves in some of my favorite songs like the amazing intro by tuvaan vocalist sainkho.
2006 - playing around
I was just playing around with DJing in ableton with live effects and my new controllers… probably some good music on this one.
2006 - beta test
I was just playing around with DJing in ableton with live effects and my new controllers… probably some good music on this one too
2001 chaos theory
