Check it out! After all these years I finally corrected the missing ID3 tags for all my mixes and embedded the artwork in the files so that when you import it into i-tunes you can visually scroll through the mixes. Doesn’t it look better?

This was a good year for me at burningman. So many poawerful experiences and life changing art experiences. I was in an extremely emotional state and without a dncefloor to appeal to sort of meandered from a jazzy low cool sort of thing into a emotional psychedelic space, even playing my all time favorite emotional song – William Orbit – el ninjo. This is a long mix clocking in at 115 minutes, close to two hours.

Description: Back when I lived in Chicago I used to make trips with my friends up to Northwesterns Campus to do the Streetbeat Radio show every now and then, which was always a blast and sometimes totally over the top, So when my buddies over at Part Time Suckers Radio invited me to join them on their show I was totally down. I figured now was my chance to bring the west coast sound back home and drop some of the dripping psychedelic drenched dub bass funk on the unsuspecting collegiate masses of NWU.
I got a couple interesting phone calls but the highlight was the cab drive who was compelled to stop his cab get some change and call up the station because he’d never heard anything like it in his life and was pretty blown away.

Even though Ezra and I got off to a bad start when we first met on IRC, (he insisted there was no such thing as a static IP because he only knew AOL and I portscanned him just to push his buttons and I guess I scared the shit out of him…) Anyways we got off to a bad start but the fact that we both loved similar classics like the opener on this mix "Low Cool" brought us together in the end. That and copious amounts of alcohol and ludicrous nights on the town. Ezra even gave me a copy of Low Cool on vinyl which is only topped by Joy giving me the white label she had of BT – Fibonacci Sequence because she wanted it too and didn’t have doubles. Onto describing this mix. I was hanging out with my friend Daniel in San Francisco and we were geeking out on all this edgey bluesy soulful jazzy triphop at the time and so I wanted to give my hand at the style. This is the result. I forget the name of some of the tracks at the end. Sorry. Tracklisting

This one is a classic, inspired very much by Joy who found a bunch of great music to share with me and encouraged me to think broader than psytrance since most of my friends were not only completely obsessed with trance but usually focused on one particular sound disliking other forms of psytrance. After a roadtrip where we shared 10 hours of Igors love for Infected Mushroom only to goto a trance party that sounded just like the stuff we listened to in the car we inexplicably felt an urge to branch out to get some variety. (love you igor, dont worry) Joy discovered the opening track by Nor Elle with its amazing adaptation from the beginning of Moby Dick. This mix was made in 2001 while I was living in Chicago really before I even know there was such a thing as a chill scene. It was an absolute shock to find out in 2005 that people would even dance to some of this stuff. I never would have guessed. This a loose storytelling piece based on the concept of starting underwater and slowly moving towards land. Theres a couple gems on here you may never hear anywhere else, most noticably Shakaturas "Velvet" (at 65:12 mins in) which he had posted on his website sometime in 2001 and never was able to release it (I asked him at some point if I could remix it and he said the files are gone forever due to a drive crash) A favorite! I revisited the idea of theming a mix in "the dreamer and the dreamed"
Track Listing

This mix could just as well be called psyambients greatest hits. The idea for this mix was to actually go in the opposite direction away from all the music flowing cohesively together. I wanted each song to be its own little isolated island connected by ambient interludes. Definitive spaces if you will.

The name is another Carlos Castaneda reference, this time refering to a story in which Carlos was inside a lucid dream and had the choice to wake up where his physical body lay or where his dream body was. He chose to wake up in his physical body whereupon Don Juan chided him telling him had he chosen his dream body he might have figured out the mystery of who is really the dreamer and who is the dreamed. Poor bumbling Carlos when will he ever learn?
This mix seems to be a unanimous favorite amongst my friends. It was made at a pivotal point in the psyambient scene. when all over the world psytrance devolved from really beautiful well produced spiritual music into well… whatever you call it today, thus scaring off people who didn’t have enough demons to contintually work out on the dancefloor. People were fleeing from the scene and flooded the rather minimal "psyambient" scene and putting alot of the same energy towards creating really beautiful danceable soundscapes. (ie track 8 and on). WIthout any real rules or guidelines alot of really cool music emerged. The psyambient scene in turn went the way of psytrance and eventually become a formula to repeat – which I will list here for anyone interested in creating psyambient. No really, the more you beat this dead horse the better!
- Outboard gear is pretty much useless… you can get everything you need from sample cds and softsynths
- Rape and Pillage some pirated Spectrasonics Sample cds. Particularily the world vocal cds. You can even be as sly as Simon Posford and turn their sample cd Demos into a hit song such as Divine Moments of Truth.
- It doesn’t matter if the samples been used once or even a hundred times before. If you want to use it then use it, no one will notice.
- Try as hard as you can to sound like Shpongle (who umm just did thier own thing without trying to sound like anyone else)
- oh youll definitely need a sample or 10 from Terrence McKenna Anything mentioning "machine elves" is pure gold my friend
Multiply this formula by a thousand, crank out a bunch of crappy music and now you understand why psyambient puttered out. </rant> enjoy the music!

Description: There was a thread on my buddy evans music discussion list where he asked – What would you play in the Black Lodge from David Lynchs Twin Peaks?. I responded and realized my obscure selection would probably go over even the most seasoned music nerds head so instead I decided to post a dj mix of the really creepy weird feeling lynch moment music. If you haven’t seen his movie perhaps this music wont make much sense… why would anyone want to listen to music that makes your heair stand on edge, makes you feel really weird creepy and unpleasant? Probably for the same reason we watch the movies. Another of my friends, Mike Lazarev who runs Asmatronica, responded with a translation for the amazing Tuuvan vocalist Sainkho Namtchylaks – Order to survive which is placed below the tracklisting.

Sainkho Namtchylak – Order to Survive lyrics (translated from russian) We were ordered to stay alive and not to take a step back
full steam ahead! turn to the right, turn to the left turn to the left, full steam ahead!!!!!! [repeat bits and pieces of above] With full steam ahead, we’re carrying on, so that in many years, in many years we’d understand that everything is nothing, and nothing is something, that the end is the beginning, and beginning is everything ordered to stay alive. ordered to stay alive… somewhere there, between sunset and sunrise scent of lavender, and the song of nightinggale ordered to stay alive

Description:
All breaks, starts off soft and gentle and works it way up in energy to crazy screaming acid lines and noise noise noise. Inspired by a poem from Steven J Bernstein which is included at the end of the mix. More Noise Please I live on a street where there are many, many cars and trucks and factories that pump and bang and grind all night and day.
It is a miracle that I can write poetry or sleep or talk on the telephone or that my lover will visit me here.
There is so much noise.
Every few minutes a jet in comes in low or a prop job swings down like a kamikaze.
There is an airport at the end of my street.
The New Age people say that you choose all these things,
choose the cars and trucks and airplanes,
me and all of my neighbors.
Well, maybe this is true, maybe we can’t live without all this God damn noise.
Maybe I need the noise to write poems, make love, and eat
I’m going to hang a sign out my window that says
More Noise Please,
or Thank You For Making Noise!
Maybe we are the kind of people who need to have what we don’t want just to get along, to do the basic things.
