Squiddhartha Album released!

From the creative depths arises a new collaboration called Squiddhartha featuring the talents of Rubin Elias (Dub-Spectrum) and Kris Northern (phidelity). Their first album, “West Coast Tentacles” is a collection of tastefully eclectic, genre-defying dj friendly jams. From laid back psychedelic bubble dub, to funky, electro-break speaker shredders, there is a lil’ somethin guaranteed to get all the tentacles writhing.
If you enjoy this music consider helping spread the love as we have independently released this CD. Share these tunes via the widgets and tell all your friends.

I was honored to be asked to play at the Portland Om Records 15 year anniversary party with house legends Dj Heather from my hometown Chicago, Olivier Desmet from Belgium and local hero Mercedes. Since I played early in the night I decided to use this as a chance to try my hand at playing a bunch of the 100bpm space disco I’d collected and work my way into all the new goodies Ive collected over the summer. Please leave your thoughts and comments below – they are always welcome… Also to be informed of new mixes please sign up for my mailing list below

Artikulation with a visual score

In 1956 György Ligeti composed “Artikulation” after moving to Cologne into the same building as sound pioneers Karlheinz Stockhausen and Gottfried Michael Koenig. While its reported that he was highly influenced by the crazy electronic sounds he heard coming out of this building this is one of only two electronic pieces he composed before returning back to the intrumental medium.

The liner notes for the score provide an explanation for what’s going on in the music:

The piece is called ‘Artikulation’ because in this sense an artificial language is articulated: question and answer, high and low voices, polyglot speaking and interruptions, impulsive outbreaks and humor, charring and whispering.

This is classified in the “Discretization” class of Musical Analysis, where the  process of analysis often involves breaking the piece down into relatively simpler and smaller parts. Often, the way these parts fit together and interact with each other is then examined in different contexts.

24 years later (1970) Rainer Wehinger created a “Hörpartitur” or “score for listening” for the piece, representing different sonorous effects with specific graphic symbols much like a transcription. Which is shown below. While the piece already had a score – this visual score can be considered a more user friendly version which focuses on the main sonic charectaristics instead of traditional elements like discrete pitches and symbols.

To realize this in a score, Wehinger used a timeline measured in seconds, and used shapes and colors instead of notes on a staff. He used dots for impulses and combs for noise. He used different colors to represent variations in timbre and pitch.

For a number of years this has existed on record and then later cd – and now finally on the internet as someone scanned the pages, synced it to the music and added a “current position” bar.

The focus of Designer Minds is on innovative underground dance music whatever the flavor, which begs the question – what exactly is “underground” anways? With venturing too deep into subjective opinion I’ll venture that when a persons integrity outweighs ego and their dedication to artistic expression is unwavering they oftentimes will be described as underground.

With that said – Random Rab is such an artist, Just doin his thing, and making music true to his heart. For Seattle at the synchromystic event this meant a special night  – one where the energy held tight and only built as the evening progressed with Rab holding down the “Sexy Time” with some of the thickest funky beats that have ever hit the Church of Bass.

If you enjoy this recording take a moment to reflect what takes to make it happen and consider supporting the underground artists that help make it happen.  The cd is absolutely stellar, the audio is pristine, deep, and incredibly well engineered with some of my personal favorite artwork I’ve seen to date from Andrew Jones – and hes done a lot of wicked stuff over the years. Purchase your own copy by clicking the image below. Many props to Rab for permission to post this and sharing his love with us. Oh yes! Skoi had the foresight to bring a recorder to this show and caught both mine and Random Rabs set (which you can check here). This was a great show – the venue was packed with people getting down all night long – not one moment where the energy waned. I played after Rab and so being a big fan of his worked wanted to slowly work out of his grooves into whatever else flowed…. turns out what flowed was a one way trip to the land of facemelt. I didnt see that one coming.

Welcome to the latest installment of the designer minds podcast – Most people think of full on tribal techno large soundsystem mayhem when talking about Michael Manahans dj set – but did you know he has a softer fuzzier side? – granted the softer fuzzier side only seems to come out around the third bottle of tequila or so to kill the pain of a hard days work doing drive-bys. He’s a hard working man… This is a beautiful introspective IDM mix perfectly fitted for the northwest winters or wherever you may find yourself. Leave comments or visit his website. Tracklisting coming soon.
