as of 2013, Jack and I have been putting  Playground on for 6 years now. It’s a free outdoor dance party underneath the iconic and breathtakingly beautiful St. Johns Bridge in Portland. The very first one was a collective effort with Evan Bluetech, Rain PhuturePrimitive, Manoj, myself, Jack and Victor chipping in 50-100 bucks to throw a free park party. Since then it’s continued growing and gaining noteriety as a staple in the Portland electronic scene. It draws people from a wide variety of electronic sub-scenes and gets them to hang out in the sun all day. This fact is especially pronounced when you end up with my super jaded IDM nerd friends being actually hearing house music, Not to say they don’t complain or like it one bit, but one hopes with repeated exposure they will strengthen their resistance and not have such a strong reaction when they hear it.

Anyways, I’m really pleased with this recording/set. I’ve finally nailed down the tricky 110-117 bpm wonky balearic / cosmic disco vibe which I didn’t have any recordings of… until now. Of additional note is that this mix really spans the length of time I’ve been listening to electronic music starting with a tune from ’92-’93 and covering all the years in-between.

The Big Hair Showdown at Crab Town

crabtown

I suppose this one warrants some explaining – What is CrabTown? It’s a place Sam, Jeremey (e.v.a.c.) and I went to three years ago and were blown away by the unbelievable nonsensicle creatures and coral the ocean vomited up on the tidal flats north of Makah Bay at the Photosynthesis festival in 2011. We were well impressed with all this and nicknamed this place Crab Town after an inside joke that began when we ran into either a dose of crabs – or a cast of crabs (depending on which obscure collective known you prefer). One of the crabs in the dose we nicknamed Emerald Tony owing to his bright green emerald coloring. and from there we started referring to the place as CrabTown.

This inside joke runs deep. Deeper than I have time to explain really (and frankly its too soon as the statute of limitations havent run out on some of the elements yet) but for now check out the photo of the flask that was created for those in the know.

This was the 9th Esthetric Evolution which takes place deep in a beautiful Idaho valley 1.5 hours north of Boise. It is a really interesting blend of oldschool seasoned ravers and no holds barred youthful neo-raver types replete in faux fur and candy regalia. Jesiah of Chickenhed asked me to play on the ‘chill’ stage – in checking the main board to see who was playing when I noticed that, in the genre column, every single artist was listed as “psychedelic”, which gave me a chuckle as I’m not a big fan of the genre pigeonhole.

This set started off with a style I described to a friend as being the audio equivelant of “a monkey on the edge of your clawfoot bathtub performing a violin serenade for your bubblebath”. This style leads into weird and not quite relaxing psychedelic IDM glitch. There was a point where my wife, Alisha, thought I took it too far and said with that small amount of concern in her voice that wives are known for “This is a chill room – isn’t this a bit too crazy?” I responded that “It’s not a chill room – it’s the psychedelic stage and this is perfect… just listen to it… it sounds like your mind being flushed down a toilet!” I did eventually chill out a bit and played music that focused more on the beauty and less on the challenge.

I also did an uptempo set on Saturday evening at this festival.

Tracklisting:

  1. Unknown – Unknown (I’m working on it…)
  2. Robert Rich – Premonitions of circular clouds
  3. Atom ™ –  Weißes Rauschen (Zweiter Teil)

  5. Bichi – Clouds Are Parceled Out Across My Vision
  6. Koan Sound – Green and Blue
  7. Boards of Canada – Dayvan Cowboy
  8. Tipper – Algae Bloom in Seven
  9. Kiln – Korsaire
  10. Autechre – Corc
  11. EU – Boloto
  12. Bogger – Error
  13. Bichi – I am the god of small changes scamming my way through the future

  15. Bitstream – Streamlining
  16. Bola – Veronex Cypher
  17. Skipsapiens – Doctor Silla

For the 4th time, I was honored to be invited back to the annual Photosynthesis festival held on the northwest tip of the Olympic Penninsula on the epicly beautiful Makah tribe land. This is the downtempo set I did in the H’art center on sunday night. I used this as a chance to play some of the weirder eclectic sound-scape / sound-design glitchy IDM tunes that have been collecting dust in my folders.

Be sure to check out the uptempo set I also did this year.

I was honored to be invited back to the 5th annual Photosynthesis festival held on the northwest tip of the Olympic Penninsula on the epicly beautiful Makah tribe land on Neah Bay.This event is special for many reasons but I think what does it the most for me is the cultural cross pollination with the Native Makah tribe who have lived and fished on the land for many thousands of years. The tidal flats north of Neah Bay lend their own form of magic to the timeless feeling I experience when visiting.

This year I was asked to do two sets – One upbeat set on the main stage and a downtempo chillout set in the H’art dome. this, of course, is the uptempo set which is comprised mostly of special edits of my favorite songs to squeeze as much goodness as possible into an hour set. The genres go all over the place to the degree that I hesitate to list them in case someone confuses this mix for the confused rambling of a eclectic madman.

With Special thanks To Mark Hall for handling the recording of this and a shout out to the Photosynthesis crew for all their hard work creating such a special event.

This was a special set which was part of a larger special weekend (see the photoblog for photographic evidence). This set occurred between Dj Cam and Tipper on the main stage Saturday night. I spent quite a long time preparing for this set, cutting tons of special edits of songs I like but drag on too long, slicing and dicing bits into songs I like. The recording has a mic which was posted on one of the beams – throughout the recording you’ll hear cheering and crowd noise – mostly in a good way. This is also responsible for a slightly less than pristine audio quality. Oh well cant win em all. =) Rest assured the real audio sounds much crisper and kickass on a soundsystem.
oh… and it starts abruptly and ends abruptly. again… not my department. I would like to thank Mark Hall who I assume handled the recording of the sets and getting them all online. ;)

Garrett who was running sound, shot some videos during this set so you can peep it. I think the audio is quite loud so you might wanna check your volume first. =)

I was honored to be asked to play shortly after the ball dropped on NYE alongside some of my personal heros and favorite people Random Rab & Phaedroid (Andrew Jones & Phaedra) (p.s. dont forget the Random Rab live recording I have hosted on this site). The set went great – the KV2 was dialed and sounded amazing, the crowd stayed with me till the very end despite the unrelenting progression towards loud twisted facemelting tracks. A number of these tracks are special edits I made.

I held off for a while on posting this mix because I’m a perfectionist about a few things and this mix is less than perfect due to a less than perfect monitoring situation on the stage. The slapback was pretty brutal and I couldn’t hear the nuances of the beat – so with all that in mind you’ll pardon a few hairy mixes right? thanks =) I really can mix my way out of a wet paper bag if I had to.

This mix covers a wide range of off-kilter eclectic mid-tempo tunes with a strong emphasis on the wonky sounds coming from down under. As such it’s probably not for everyone. The mix was originally broadcast on basstream radio on Glitch.fm April 26th, 2011. For the curious… This mix is more or less what I would have played for my Decibel 2010 set if it wasn’t unfortunately cut short due to someone misplacing Beat Antiques drums which pushed everything back hours.

This is a live recording from an outdoor gathering called Prosperity that happens deep in the Washington desert with a close group of my super homies every year. I had brought out my KSP8 effects processor for real time dub effects with some midi-controllers.

The style on this mix is more or less all breaks. enjoy!
