This was the 9th Esthetric Evolution which takes place deep in a beautiful Idaho valley 1.5 hours north of Boise. It is a really interesting blend of oldschool seasoned ravers and no holds barred youthful neo-raver types replete in faux fur and candy regalia. Jesiah of Chickenhed asked me to play on the ‘chill’ stage – in checking the main board to see who was playing when I noticed that, in the genre column, every single artist was listed as “psychedelic”, which gave me a chuckle as I’m not a big fan of the genre pigeonhole.

This set started off with a style I described to a friend as being the audio equivelant of “a monkey on the edge of your clawfoot bathtub performing a violin serenade for your bubblebath”. This style leads into weird and not quite relaxing psychedelic IDM glitch. There was a point where my wife, Alisha, thought I took it too far and said with that small amount of concern in her voice that wives are known for “This is a chill room – isn’t this a bit too crazy?” I responded that “It’s not a chill room – it’s the psychedelic stage and this is perfect… just listen to it… it sounds like your mind being flushed down a toilet!” I did eventually chill out a bit and played music that focused more on the beauty and less on the challenge.

I also did an uptempo set on Saturday evening at this festival.

This is 9 I chose to put on the front of the flyer. I remember choosing something classy and I started with my favorite stand-in classy font - Eames Century Modern. It was a nice shock seeing it 20 feet tall made into a mini-golf course!

For the 4th time, I was honored to be invited back to the annual Photosynthesis festival held on the northwest tip of the Olympic Penninsula on the epicly beautiful Makah tribe land. This is the downtempo set I did in the H’art center on sunday night. I used this as a chance to play some of the weirder eclectic sound-scape / sound-design glitchy IDM tunes that have been collecting dust in my folders.

Be sure to check out the uptempo set I also did this year.

I was honored to be invited back to the 5th annual Photosynthesis festival held on the northwest tip of the Olympic Penninsula on the epicly beautiful Makah tribe land on Neah Bay.This event is special for many reasons but I think what does it the most for me is the cultural cross pollination with the Native Makah tribe who have lived and fished on the land for many thousands of years. The tidal flats north of Neah Bay lend their own form of magic to the timeless feeling I experience when visiting.

This year I was asked to do two sets – One upbeat set on the main stage and a downtempo chillout set in the H’art dome. this, of course, is the uptempo set which is comprised mostly of special edits of my favorite songs to squeeze as much goodness as possible into an hour set. The genres go all over the place to the degree that I hesitate to list them in case someone confuses this mix for the confused rambling of a eclectic madman.

With Special thanks To Mark Hall for handling the recording of this and a shout out to the Photosynthesis crew for all their hard work creating such a special event.

This was a special set which was part of a larger special weekend (see the photoblog for photographic evidence). This set occurred between Dj Cam and Tipper on the main stage Saturday night. I spent quite a long time preparing for this set, cutting tons of special edits of songs I like but drag on too long, slicing and dicing bits into songs I like. The recording has a mic which was posted on one of the beams – throughout the recording you’ll hear cheering and crowd noise – mostly in a good way. This is also responsible for a slightly less than pristine audio quality. Oh well cant win em all. =) Rest assured the real audio sounds much crisper and kickass on a soundsystem.
oh… and it starts abruptly and ends abruptly. again… not my department. I would like to thank Mark Hall who I assume handled the recording of the sets and getting them all online. ;)

Garrett who was running sound, shot some videos during this set so you can peep it. I think the audio is quite loud so you might wanna check your volume first. =)

This is a live recording from an outdoor gathering called Prosperity that happens deep in the Washington desert with a close group of my super homies every year. I had brought out my KSP8 effects processor for real time dub effects with some midi-controllers.

The style on this mix is more or less all breaks. enjoy!

Lightning in a bottle, an amazing yearly festival in southern California held a mixtape contest to win a dj slot on the line up – The limitation being that you could only use artists who were booked on the line up – seeing as their curation is impeccable I thought this could be a fun challenge.

It features three distinct sections – each one representing a different style / energy. In order to make many of these songs more dj friendly I made special edits of these songs focusing on the bits I wanted to highlight for this mix. I did the mixing in Ableton Live using several midi controllers to send audio from the computer to an external tempo-synced KSP-8 digital effects processor – you can hear a number of these lush organic dub style delays and reverbs through out the mix.

The focus of Designer Minds is on innovative underground dance music whatever the flavor, which begs the question – what exactly is “underground” anways? With venturing too deep into subjective opinion I’ll venture that when a persons integrity outweighs ego and their dedication to artistic expression is unwavering they oftentimes will be described as underground.

With that said – Random Rab is such an artist, Just doin his thing, and making music true to his heart. For Seattle at the synchromystic event this meant a special night  – one where the energy held tight and only built as the evening progressed with Rab holding down the “Sexy Time” with some of the thickest funky beats that have ever hit the Church of Bass.

If you enjoy this recording take a moment to reflect what takes to make it happen and consider supporting the underground artists that help make it happen.  The cd is absolutely stellar, the audio is pristine, deep, and incredibly well engineered with some of my personal favorite artwork I’ve seen to date from Andrew Jones – and hes done a lot of wicked stuff over the years. Purchase your own copy by clicking the image below. Many props to Rab for permission to post this and sharing his love with us.
